4B Book Club

Northeast Region

We are beginning our study of the Northeast region. We will have a test on Thursday, October 29.  Students will be responsible for knowing each states' location, capital and abbreviation. Students should use his/her study guide and the geography link to prepare.

Science Extra Credit

The science extra credit assignment is due on Thursday, October 8. Remember that each item on your food chain should be labeled as a producer, consumer or decomposer. Don't forget to color your drawings. Please see me if you still need a template for this assignment.

4B Math Test

4B math students will have the Unit 1 Math Test on Tuesday, September 29.  Please use the study guide, class website and old homework assignments to prepare.

**Remember you can earn 2 extra credit points if your parent(s) review the study guide with you.

Crickets

Crickets are arriving this week!! We will have so much fun learning about them and getting to know them. The cricket quiz will be on Monday, September 28. You may use the "Cricket" link on our website to read about the different types of crickets and label its body parts.

Student Council Reminder

If you are interested in becoming a member of student council, please remember to turn in your application on Monday, September 21st.

Curriculum Night

Please plan on attending Owen's Curriculum Night on Wednesday, September 16. There will be 2 sessions for each classroom.

Social Studies Reminder

We will have a Continent/Ocean quiz on Tuesday, September 15. Students should prepare by using his/her Continent/Ocean study guide. For additional practice students can click on the "Continents and Oceans" link at the top of the web page.

Science Quiz

We will have a science quiz is on Thursday, September 3. Students will be required to list the steps of the scientific process in order and write a description for each step. Ask your child how the following sentence can help, "Queen Helen Made Prune Rice Cookies!"

Flashlight Read

Today we announced the fourth grade 30 book reading challenge! Our big kick-off will be this Friday (August 28). We will have our first of many "flashlight reads."  Please bring a flashlight or small reading light to school on Friday.  You may also choose to read on your device. We will dim the lights and read by flashlight during our independent reading time.

First Day of School

It was nice seeing several of you at the Meet-n-Greet. I am looking forward to seeing everyone on Thursday. Please bring a book for independent reading, a towel (or small blanket) and a healthy snack.

BYOB

Don't forget that we will have BYOB- Bring Your Own Breakfast on Monday morning. Remember to bring your breakfast to school.
You will also need to bring your backpack to carry the remainder of your school items home.

5B Math

The Unit 9 math test is scheduled for Wednesday, May 27. Please use your study guide, homework assignments and the 5B website to prepare. Remember to have a parent review your study guide with you and earn 2 extra credit points.

We will have our "Cell Quiz" on Tuesday, May 26.  Please use your completed study guide to prepare.

Science Reminder

Our next science test will be on Tuesday, May 12. Students will have to label the parts of the eye and be familiar with each part's function. On Wednesday, we will work in pairs to complete a dissection of a sheep's eyeball.

Math Test Reminder

The next 5B math test will be on Monday, April 27. Please use your study guide and  the Unit 8 website links to prepare. I've recently added more links to help practice with fraction word problems.

End of the year (EOY) PARCC Testing

The EOY PARCC Testing will begin on Monday, April 27. During the week of April 27, please have your child bring in a set of headphones. A link to the 5th grade schedule is posted at the top right side of this website. There is also another link to use for practice EOY PARCC tests as well.

"Shh...We're Writing the Constitution"

Reminder:

We will perform for Owen students on Wednesday morning at 9:30. Please wear your costume to school and you will be able to change after our morning performance. 
For the night performance please arrive at school no later than 6:45pm. We will meet in the multipurpose room.
Costume:
Each student will need to wear dark colored dress pants. They also need to wear a white shirt, preferably with a collar. Students will need to wear dress shoes with a pair of long white socks. Girls should have their hair pulled back into a ponytail (if long enough).

Reminder

Students will need to have The Preamble memorized by April 20. You may use the link on this website to print off a copy or your child may see me for a copy. Students will be required to recite The Preamble starting on April 20. I will test the students in small groups.

5B Math (Unit 7)

For Unit 7, we will not have a regular end of the unit test. We will have a shorter quiz on Wednesday, March 25. Students should use his/her completed WINK sheet to prepare.  Students do not have a Unit 7 Study Guide. We will also review in class. 
Students, remember you can earn 1 extra credit point by reviewing your WINK sheet with a parent and having a parent signature.

Tips for Taking the PARCC Test
 Do some physical activity each evening to release some energy.

 Get a good night’s rest.

 Eat a nutritious breakfast each day.

 Be sure to get to school on time.

 Avoid scheduling doctor or dentist appointments during these two weeks.

 Encourage your child to do their best and think positively about their achievement.

 Remember that when we have done our best; we should just wait the results in peace.


As students navigate their way through their educational journey, here are a few tips you can share with your child on how to master test anxiety.
 Avoid thinking of yourself in all-or-nothing terms.

 Reward yourself after the test. Visit a friend, go out and play, or read a favorite book.

 Work at a consistent and moderate pace when studying or taking a test.

 If waiting for the test to begin causes anxiety, distract yourself by closing your eyes and

 imagine yourself answering the questions confidently, or take a few slow deep breaths.

 Read the questions TWICE. Read all the words.

 For multiple choice questions, read ALL the options first, then eliminate the two most obvious. If you’re still unsure of the correct answer, rely on your first impression and move on.

 Beware of tricky qualifying words such as only, always, none, all, or most.

 Don’t worry when students finish before you do. There is no reward for being done first.

 If there is still time remaining in the test session, go back and review your answers.

 Know in your heart that anything is possible! Perseverance pays off.

 Success is achieved by those who try and keep trying.

 We are very proud of you no matter what the results!

PARCC Testing

PARCC Testing will begin next week. Please take a moment to view the schedule on the top, left- hand side of the website. Please make sure your child is in attendance and comes to school well rested. As an additional reminder, your child will need a set of headphones or earbuds to use during the test. If you haven't done so already, please send in earbuds for your student. They should be placed in a small labeled baggie.

Book Commercials

Students should have already signed up for their next book commercial. Now it's time to prepare!  We will start taping commercials on March 11th.

5B Math Test

The Unit 6 Math Test will be on Wednesday, March 4. Please use your study guide and your Wink Sheet to prepare. You may also use the Unit 6 math links and videos on the 5B website. If you would like to earn 2 extra credit points, I will also collect signed study guides on the day of the test.

Six Flags Reading Incentive

The Six Flags reading logs are due on Friday, February 20. Please be sure to turn your form in on time.

If you have not turned in your Nicor Survey, please have it turned in by Friday, February 20.

5B Math

The Unit 5 math test will be on Friday, February 6.  Your child will be bringing home a completed study guide at the beginning of next week to help him/her prepare for the test. Please use the Unit 5 math links for extra practice as well. Don't forget to watch the videos for a quick review too!

Registration forms

The registration forms for Still Middle School were due today (January 30). If you have not turned it in already it is very important that your child brings it to school on Monday.

Social Studies Test

The chapter 8 Social Studies (pages 266-291) test will be on Thursday, February 5. Your student already has a completed study guide. Please help your child prepare by reviewing vocabulary and discussing the topics on the study guide.

2nd Quarter Auction

On Thursday, we will have our 2nd quarter auction. You will need to make a list of the item(s) that you would like to submit to the auction. This list needs to be signed by a parent. Remember once your items are sold in the auction, they can't be returned to you. If your list is not signed by a parent you will not be able to submit your items.

Reminder!!

On Wednesday, January 28, 5th graders will have a presentation on the Revolutionary War. Please dress accordingly. If your classroom number is ODD, wear a BLUE shirt. If your classroom number is EVEN, wear a RED shirt. For example, Alexis is #1, so she should wear blue. Alok is #2 he should wear red.

Unit 2 Performance Task for Reading

Your brainstorming assignment for the Unit 2 Performance Task is due on Tuesday, January 20. Please sign into Google Classroom to complete this assignment. Use your Google Drive password to log-in. Your choice will be confirmed on Tuesday. It would be better to wait until Tuesday before you start any major research.
